Separation of sexes has been achieved many times in several ways, ranging from spatial or time separation in the same individual to segregation into different individuals. There are two major hypotheses proposed to explain the evolution of separate sexes: trade-offs between male and female function and avoiding self-fertilization. Contrary to common myths that are prevalent even among biologists, sex determining mechanisms are diverse (e.g., genotypic and environmental), multiple genes can determine sex (cf. master-switch Sry gene in mammals), and sex chromosome differentiation is not moving in only one direction.
